The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer’s actions in firing three shots at Savey Suos in Whanganui on 6 January 2017 were lawful and proportionate.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer’s use of a ‘carotid hold’ while arresting a man in Tawa was disproportionate to the resistance being offered and amounted to excessive force.

16 November 2017

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police unlawfully arrested, and used unjustified force on, a man in Lower Hutt on 23 December 2015.

14 November 2017

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police were justified in commencing a pursuit of a stolen Subaru in Taita, Wellington, on 12 November 2016. Police generally conducted the pursuit in accordance with policy, apart from not following the full abandonment procedure after losing sight of the Subaru for some time.

Currently, New Zealand Police officers are involved in on average 300 fleeing driver events (commonly referred to as “Police pursuits”) per month. Drivers who choose to undertake high-risk driving behaviour when failing to stop for Police, increase the risk to themselves and the public, including the risk of serious injury or fatality. While these events are challenging, dynamic and complex events, they only represent a small proportion (0.1%) of vehicle stops by Police each year.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer was justified in firing shots from a pistol at Murray Allan in Christchurch on 4 February 2017. Mr Allan received minor injuries to his head.

12 October 2017

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that two officers should have made further enquiries when dealing with an incident involving Tevita Filo on 6 January 2016, and that a Police dispatcher did not pass on all the available information.

21 September 2017

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer was justified in shooting Michael Taylor at Paeroa on 10 June 2016.

14 September 2017

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a number of shortcomings and delays with a Police investigation gave the appearance that two off-duty Police officers had received favourable treatment.

12 September 2017

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer was not justified in using a Taser on a prisoner on 26 January 2017, because the prisoner was not directly assaulting or threatening him or others at the time. However, Police were justified in using other force to restrain the prisoner.
