The Authority oversaw a Police investigation relating to an incident where the tips of a detainee’s fingers were severed when Police shut them in the door of a Police vehicle. This happened during an arrest with multiple parties involved, including another detainee who was trying to escape Police custody.
The Police investigation found staff had no intention of shutting his fingers in the door and identified several learning opportunities through discussions with staff. Police have changed their processes to prevent similar incidents in future and apologised for the injuries sustained.
The Authority agrees with the findings of the investigation and actions taken by Police.
